Back in the day, there was a story that went viral on the Reddit forums about a guy and his mom. The gist of it was, after breaking both of his arms in an accident, this guy started getting irritable because he couldn’t get off by himself. His mom decided it was her job to do it for him until he healed.

Prince of Suburbia is a game where it seems as if someone read that exact Reddit post and decided that it’d be a good idea to expand it into a full visual novel experience.

Whilst that premise isn’t necessarily my fetish, I can respect that it may be someone else’s. Unfortunately, the developers don’t fully commit to the stepmother kink.

When you start up the game for the first time, you are briefly introduced to a few different women, and the game informs you of their default roles before giving you the opportunity to change it.

For example, when the stepmother is introduced, the game informs you that her default role is landlady. Because I had no idea who these women were otherwise at that point in the plot, I chose to go with the default.

Ensue confusion. It took some time with the game before I put it together that this woman living with me and caring about me was not just a landlady, but someone who dated my father and helped me survive and thrive as a young man.

These are a few of the issues that plague Prince of Suburbia, which is a shame, because the game otherwise has an interesting method of kinetic visual novel storytelling.

A kinetic visual novel is a linear plot-line that you typically passively experience from beginning to end. While Prince of Suburbia is still linear, it ensures you remain engaged with what is happening on the screen by giving you basic choices to make and screen interactions to click.

The art is very solid, where the 18+ scenes are often well detailed and animated to fit with what is happening in the story.

Overall, Prince of Suburbia wasn’t necessarily my jam, but it could very well still be someone else’s. Here’s hoping the developer commits in full to the kink and allows itself to fully play to the fantasy.
