ADULT GAME REVIEW: JASON by Coeur de Cochon

JASON, Coming of Age

by Coeur De Cochon

JASON's world is vast and full of pretty girls. Play as Jason and enjoy a thrilling adventure.

Jason is a recent Adult Visual Novel, created by a French developer Coeur de Cochon. The game has a fairly simple premise – you play as titular Jason, (the name can be changed at the beginning of the game), a young man who has just moved into a new apartment in New City leaving his family home behind. He is also about to start a new job in an IT department of a local newspaper. This is quite a refreshing approach, much different from the popular one where the MC is an university student, or some kind of a mystical being or a chosen one. There is a supernatural element in the game but, at least as of now, it’s nothing too exaggerated or over the top, so that is a good thing. But since I do my best to avoid spoilers here, I won’t delve too deep into this.

This game is available to play for free on our website. If you like it support the developer by tossing him a token :)

As for the characters in the game, they are very well made, render wise they are of good quality, very crisp, it’s obvious that the developer put a lot of work and effort into his project. Another thing that distinguishes this game from others, in a positive sense of course, is that Jason doesn’t have a body or an overall appearance of an athlete or a model with muscles all over, he is rather average looking with glasses on, which in my opinion makes him much more relatable to any player. Crisp, well made graphically characters and sharp renders are definitely a plus.

This kind of slight tweaks to the most common solutions used in the games are refreshing and make it quite enjoyable in my opinion.

As for the girls that the player possibly can develop a relationship with, again, none of them is exaggerated and there is quite a variety there. We get a cute redhead, a girl next door type, who is Jason’s friend for a long time, that’s the one we so far get the most opportunities to interact with. But the choices don’t end here, our MC lives after all in a quite interesting alley, we get a porn shop, an older baker in bigger size, an elderly grocery shop owner (the shop is quite interesting, as groceries are not all you can get there – but we need to wait for new chapters of the game to see that.), a prostitute and some more mysterious figures we don’t know much about – a stranger we have a small accident with and a club owner again an original approach since not many games have a big chunk of the action happening around the MC’s apartment – usually it’s a workplace, or a dorm at a university. This kind of slight tweaks to the most common solutions used in the games are refreshing and make it quite enjoyable in my opinion.

All we have access so far is a prologue, so we don’t see much that much of a plot yet, but there are enough hooks to make me want get back to this game when next chapters will be released – the mysterious club owner and a stranger who accidentally bumped into the MC and caused him to lose his consciousness. There is plenty of space for an interesting plot to develop, but we have to wait and see if the high quality will be kept up in the future.

One thing you notice from the start, at least when you choose the English language version of the game is that not everything is translated from the French language – I don’t know about other language versions, I don’t know any of the other languages so I didn’t try them out. While information about unlocked scenes or a gallery don’t matter, the whole information after the end of the prologue was in French only which got me quite confused. I know creating a game in so many languages can be challenging, so there is still time for the creator to work on this issue and improve it. Small typos in English also happen, but nothing game breaking and since English isn’t the first language of the developer, it is understandable.

Another thing I really like is the attention to details in the scenes and the effort the developer put to make them realistic, for example some different food items in the bakery and what struck me the most in a positive sense is the moving sunlight inside the apartment during various times of the day. Not everyone pays attention to such small details, but these details make the game even more realistic.

Another matter worth mentioning is the soundtrack which I personally find as a great choice on behalf of the developer, I think I liked all of the chosen songs and also mentioning titles of some of them is a very good choice, if a tune will get stuck in your head. On the other hand there is something sound wise some people may find annoying – sound effects during sexy time. It is hard to match the exact sounds to what we see on screen as well as a level of volume. That’s a weaker point and I’d avoid it if possible.

So far we didn’t have many opportunities to see animations in this game, but from what was shown, the quality was quite good, not excellent or exceptional but enough not to want people to skip them immediately. Great and lengthy animations require an in depth knowledge and good equipment which is not accessible to everyone and certainly not from the start.

Another thing I like about this game is the fact that, at least so far, it is just a simple game that lets you enjoy the plot, with a standard promise of important decisions and results of player’s choices being shown in the future. No overly complicated puzzle or riddles, which can be quite annoyed if they are added in exaggeration. Fortunately ‘Jason’ is not the case.

There are some errors or mistakes at the moment like spelling mistakes or there are one or two instances where the renders seem to be out of the intended order – one moment a character doesn’t have clothes on, then again they are on. But it is nothing that can’t be easily smoothed out when adding another chapter of the game.

There is a good chance we may see more diverse characters, especially the baker’s friend and Asian masseuses give me hope we will be able to really choose a girl for Jason from any potential shape, sizes and age, which is something I really enjoy in the games.

Conclusion:

Overall, the game is original enough to keep me interested, the developer managed to avoid the most common and repeated tropes of being at university or adopted by a new family to make me want to keep an eye on it. Another interesting, perhaps the most interesting side of Jason is a very subtle promise, a hint of some supernatural power or being, yet apart from glimpses or suggestions we didn’t get a developed lore yet. But such is the role of the prologue, to keep you interesting while setting the world of the game in form of you. And I’m certainly interested and want to play more of Jason. Any technical issues I mentioned above can be easily fixed and I can only hope the potential of each of the character we already were introduced to, will be fulfilled. I certainly look forward to see more of this game.

Pros:

  • Good looking, crisp renders

  • Quite original premise for a prologue

  • Excellent soundtrack

  • Interesting enough plot

Cons:

  • Some French text is not translated into English at all

  • Some audio effects, especially with explicit scenes may be annoying

  • Lack of ‘Skip’ button

  • Lack of diversity among characters, at least so far.
