History of Porn games – The 90s Adult Games

This is the 2nd part of our journey through the history of adult games. If you missed the first part you can read it here where I talk about how it all began in the 80s porn games history article.

Now it's time to move on to the Funky era. I still consider the 90s one of the best era for adult games, when big companies were still making them and big publishers were still publishing them. Yes even such names as Bandai-Namco the company behind Elden Ring were creating adult games back then, and they were not the only one.

In the 1990s, Nintendo released a game called The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. This was one of many games in the Zelda series (a popular franchise that has sold over 70 million copies worldwide), and it was designed for children. However, there were also some adult-oriented scenes hidden within the game's code. If you used the right cheat codes, you could view these scenes.

They showed a topless woman, as well as a naked man with his genitalia censored out. Nintendo quickly removed these codes from future versions of the game, but it was too late—they had already been discovered by curious gamers.

Nintendo's censorship of these hidden adult-oriented scenes caused a huge controversy in the video game world. However the in stream of new sexual explicit adult only games could not be stopped.

Some trend continued from the 80s adult games like a wide selection of Strip Poker and other Casino themed games including Hot Slots, Cover Girl Strip Poker and Peek-A-Book Poker.

You gotta love the 90s interactive video games. There were a ton of them. This is a scene from a game called Riana Rouge. Game was bad. But it had a playmate in it.

But what really made a mark were the adult adventure and management games.

90s adult adventure games - The Larry Suit Larry Era

There was a ton of amazing adult adventure games that came into life some of them are still considered classics and you will not be disappointing playing them even now, 30 years later.

Yes Larry is the true king of the 90s. Sierra published not one but 3 Larry games ,and they also released the remake version of the first Larry the Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, which now also included graphics not just text.

The 3 Larry games released were:

Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work (1991)

Even though it is numbered as the 5th game it is actually the 4th game in the series. The difficulty of the game was lowered considerably in comparison to previous games and you could no longer die or have a game over.

Leisure Suit Larry 6: Shape Up or Slip Out! (1993)

It was the first game in the Leisure Suit Larry series to be released on CD-ROM; it was also the first game of its kind to contain voice acting, motion captured animation and video sequences. This was huge in the 90s not just for an adult game but for any game really.

Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail! (1996)

Love for Sail also shipped with a "CyberSniff 2000", a sheet of numbered scratch-and-sniff paper, corresponding to a number displayed on the screen at a certain location, so that the player can get a scent of what the area the player character is in smells like.

Some consider the 90s Larry games to be the best and the true last of the Leisure Suit Larry series. I tend to agree.

BeelzeRog show presents Leisure Suit Larry a lewd game series that went mainstream

Larry inspired a lot of games and is still inspiring them today. In the 90s there was a Les Manley series of two games Les Manley in: Search for the King and Les Manley in: Lost in L.A. which most of the people consider a decent Larry alternatives.

There was also a Czech Larry inspired game called 7 dní a 7 nocí (English: 7 Days and 7 Nights) It was released in 1994 and it was the first ever Czech game to use a Sound Blaster

Lula – The german response

Larry was not the only adult series that was going strong in the 90s. There was another development team called Interactive Strip that produce games with Lula a blonde bimbo bombshell girl on a mission to conquer the adult entertainment. There were several games that featured Lula but we will take a look at the 2 most successful.

Lula: The Sexy Empire was an adult game that consisted of two parts a more adventurous first part that revolves in a small town and where you make your money as on 90s OnlyFans model and then the second part where it turns more into a film studio simulations where you need to hire staff and generate films by producing them and doing deals to distribute them across the planet. Finally, you finish by setting up sex store chain across the world until you make enough money to launch a satellite into space and with it ending the sex business domination of the world.

Wet Attack: The Empire Cums Back was the sequel to the Sexy Empire game and it is a full blown management game with some combat elements in it. The main plot is you the MC need to find Lula who got lost in space.

The player takes the ship between planets to do some trading and hire an all-female crew which you need to keep satisfied, yes in all areas. You can upgrade the ship and while you are docked you can actually turn the ship into a brothel which you then need to manage and make sure everyone is happy. Yes a lot is going on in Wet Attack.

The ship can be upgraded: engines, guns, shields, spy satellites can be purchased or found. While docking at a planet, the ship turns into a brothel, which the player has to manage in order to keep virtual customers happy.

The Hentai / Eroge games of the 90s

One of the first hentai games I personally came in contact with was Cobra Mission: Panic in Cobra City, a classic Japanese adventure game released in 1992 for the PC-98 and later for the Sega Genesis. The game was developed by Cobra Team and published by NCS Corporation. In the game, the player takes on the role of a special agent tasked with stopping a terrorist group from taking over the city of Cobra.

The game is known for its challenging puzzles, colorful graphics, and memorable soundtrack. It was well-received in Japan, but it was not as well-known outside of the country until it was translated and released in English by Jast USA in 1996. Despite its age, Cobra Mission: Panic in Cobra City is still remembered fondly by fans of adventure games and is considered a classic of the genre.

One of the porn games that made it's marks in history was True Love. True Love was originally released in Japan for the PC-98 in 1995, and was later ported to the Sega Saturn in 1997. The game was developed by Software House Parsley and published by JAST USA. The Sega Saturn version was the first time the game was made available in English, but it was not officially released outside of Japan until 1999, when JAST USA translated and published it.

True Love was one of the first dating simulation games to gain popularity outside of Japan, and it helped to popularize the genre in the West. Although it was not the first dating simulation game to be released, it was one of the first to receive an English translation and be distributed in the United States. The game's unique storyline, memorable characters, and multiple endings helped it to stand out from other games in the genre and cement its place in the history of dating simulation games.

The Japanese adult game industry continued to grow and evolve throughout the 1990s, with many popular and influential games being released during this time period. Some of the most notable adult games from the 1990s include:

Lightning Warrior Raidy (1994) - a dungeon-crawling RPG Eroge. One of the game most players consider a classic. It was remade several times.

Nocturnal Illusions (1995) - A classic graphic adventure game filled with beautiful girls.

Divi-Dead (1998) - A true adult 2dcg visual novel game. A horror mystery heavy on the story but still filled with erotic elements

Dancing Eyes  (1996) - A sexy puzzle arcade game developed by Namco. Yes that Namco.

Luv Wave (1999): A dating sim that is considered one of the first "bishoujo" games, a sub-genre of adult games that features beautiful women as the primary characters.

These games and others from the 1990s helped to establish the Japanese adult game industry and set the stage for the continued growth and evolution of the genre. Despite the increasing popularity of adult games in Japan, they were still not widely available outside the country due to cultural differences and restrictions on the sale of sexually explicit material.

In upcoming years, video games have become much more advanced than they were when Nintendo first released the sexy patch for Zelda. Developers were starting to create fully-realized worlds that are more realistic than ever before. This has led to an increased interest in adult themes and content among gamers—many people wanted to see things like sex, violence and profanity in their favorite titles. And yes a lot of classics came to live in the 00s.

Take a look at the final part of the history of adult games where I take a look at the Booming era of the 00s.

There were a LOT of games in the 90s that came on cd rom. They were real humans doing scenes and you would have to make choices during the scene and depending on the choices you made determined what the next scene would be. It was basically a combination between a porn movie and a choose your own adventure books. They were great. I wish I could find them now. Do theu still make them? How can I get them? I want real people though...NOT cartoons or whatever.
