GOOGLE ANALYTICS SET UP ON STEAM, ITCH.io & PATREON

Tracking the performance of your stores is a crucial element of being a successful dev. Without google analytics set up on your Steam, Itch or Patreon page you are doing things blind. In this tutorial I will show you how to set up the analytics and how to get an idea of how things perform.

SETTING UP GOOGLE ANALYTICS

This is the first thing we need to do before we can move on

1. First we need to set up the account on google analytics

2. Once you have it log-in and set up your first property for instance "MyPatreon". Make sure you select universal GA account as all of the platform are still using this you can opt-in for a new GA4 as well

3. Click Create and then Managed connected site tags

4. Copy the UA number for this property. We will need this when connecting the analytics to for instance Patreon

5. Next click on the top left corner where the name of your account is and select the Property that has the UA in front. Click on all web data. This will open up the analytics for your this property for instance for your Patreon page

6. If you use more sites or store like Steam or Itch you will need to create additional properties. You can do so by clicking on admin button bottom left (the gear icon) and then create new property. Follow the same procedure and copy down the UA for that property for instance Steam

Now that we have the UA code at hand we can go to the next step in connecting them to your pages.

IMPORTANT TRACKING ENHANCEMENT!

To get the best data possible you need to assign UTM code to your links when you share them or your data will be way less effective.

Getting UTM into your links is quite easy if you use this UTM TOOL.

Here is an example of utm generated link:

1. SETTING UP GOOGLE ANALYTICS ON PATREON

Most of the content creators in adult gaming industry use Patreon as one of their main income sources so let's start with this one.

1. Log In to your Patreon account

2. Select My Page

3. Click on Edit page

4. Click on edit setting

5. Scroll down to the Google Analytics section and enter your UA here.

Now the connection between your analytics and Patreon is set up. Now let's set up some conversions so you will see how your traffic behaves and where your pledges originate from etc. This will require us to set up GOALS

1. Go back to your Google Analytics and select the Patreon Property - All website data

2. Click on the Admin (gears icon) and GOALS

3. Click on create new GOAL.

4. Name it "Pledge", select the type as event

5. Enter "pledge" into the category field

Now there are some limitations on what Patreon sends to analytics so we can try to optimize some data further and add some additional goals.

I recommend adding a Checkout goal as well!

If all is set properly you should see data coming into your google analytics soon. You can then go back to your property and select conversions on the left side. You will see data showing up here. Create some segments like the source etc to get a better idea where the users are coming from that convert to your pledging members

2. SETTING UP ANALYTICS ON STEAM

Steam has a far better system when it comes to tracking as they already have the analytics available on the platform as well. As they already have guides available for this I will just use the links provided as they are best described there. Do not forget to create a new Steam property when connecting your GA to Steam

IMPORTANT: UTM TRACKING IS NECESSARY FOR STEAM ANALYTICS TO WORK! Read above on how to set that up.

1. A handy guide on setting up Analytics on Steam using UTM

2. Connect your google analytics to Steam using this guide

3. SETTING UP ANALYTICS ON ITCH.io

As with Steam or Patreon you also need a google UA code to connect analytics to Itch.io

1. Log into your Itch account

2. Click on your username and settings

3. Scroll down and select 3rd party analytics

Once connected you will start to see data in your ithc analytics property page. Again set up the goals to start tracking any conversions needed. I recommend setting up a checkout page goal to track the conversions. UTM sharing is again crucial to get the full set of data needed.
